How do you find decide between saying ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to opportunities?
Do you remember the movie ‘Yes Man’? It was fairly ridiculous, but it was actually based on a true story. I found the movie to be inspiring. If you are paralysed by fear, as I was, and want to say ‘yes’ to exciting opportunities, but are afraid, then being able to say ‘Yes’ can be liberating and open new doors. In fact, it’s often the ‘Yes’ moments that mark major life events, ‘Yes, I’ll take the job’, could lead to a new career. ‘Yes, I’ll go to the party’ could lead to a new relationship. ‘Yes, I’d like to learn more’ could lead to a new business. Saying ‘Yes’ can get you started, but you have to learn to say ‘No’ if you want to start a business.
The movie also clearly demonstrates the problem with saying ‘Yes’ to everything. In order to be successful, you have to learn to say ‘No’. In today’s world, saying ‘No’ is more important than ever because there is so much distraction. The key is to be able to say ‘Yes’ to what you really want and ‘No’ to almost everything else. You have to learn to say ‘No’ if you want to start a business.
Wrestling with Fear
If fear is holding you back from pursuing something that you really want or you need to do, then it’s important to first distinguish between perceived threats and real threats. You must address any real threats with appropriate risk mitigation strategies. It’s important to dig into any perceived threats to understand where they are coming from. Is it a legitimate concern or an irrational fear based on some previous experience?
Focus, Focus, Focus
Saying ‘No’ is critical to maintaining your focus. Focus is power. Your ability to focus might be the determining factor in your success, especially in today’s world. Imagine trying to take your final exams online with ads and notifications constantly popping up. Hmm…that would actually be good training for being successful in online business 🙂 So, how do you filter out all the noise and distraction and still be open to new opportunities? You have to learn to say ‘No’ if you want to start a business.
Know thyself
It’s take a lot of personal development work. You have to know yourself pretty well and know what you what in life to appropriately filter all the information and opportunities that come at you on a daily basis. The more clear you are about who your are and what you want in life, the easier it is to say ‘No’ to everything that doesn’t align with your vision for your future and your values.
Excitement vs. Fear
Sometimes things scare you a little because you’re excited by the opportunity but have fear about moving forward. I think it’s important to live courageously, to honor the direction that your heart pulls you and be smart about managing risk.
