Commit to making your life better
Here’s a silly question, are there any areas of your life that you would like to improve? I mean, maybe your life is going pretty well, but there is always some room to improve, right? What if you committed to making the next year the best year of your life? How would that improve your quality of life? What if you decided to focus on making improvements in a few key areas and just see what is possible for you and how far you can go toward creating a better life? Which areas would you focus on? What would you work to improve?
Improve your health
If you are looking to improve your life, what is the most fundamental area to focus on? It seems to me that it doesn’t get much more fundamental that health and wellness. To a large degree, our success in life comes down to how we show up. A big part of that is how we feel physically. If you have more energy, vitality, focus, confidence, etc. how would that improve every aspect of your life? What if you decided that the for the next year you are going to work on eating better and exercising more consistently?
Improve your relationships
Much of our success and happiness in life comes down to our relationships. Think about how great it is to be able to call a friend when you need some support. One good friend can greatly improve the quality of your life. Think about how much one toxic relationship can destroy the quality of your life? Relationships are a critical area to work to improve. What if you decided that for the next year you are going to work on improving the relationships that are the most important to you and learning how to interact with everyone in a better way so that all of your interactions with others improve?
Improve your professional skills
We all need to earn a living and doing that comes down to the value we are able to add to the marketplace. Developing and maintaining a professional skillset is critical to our ability to improve the quality of our own lives by adding value to the lives of others. What if you identified the business and professional skills that you need to move your life forward and committed to mastering those skills over the next year? How would that improve your quality of your life? No matter who you are, you have value to add. By being strategic about the skills you develop and committing to being excellent at them, you can drastically improve your ability to create income.
Putting it all together
Often we have a general desire to improve our lives, but we don’t take action because we don’t have a vision, a plan and someone to hold us accountable. Just making a few small changes can have a ripple effect in every aspect of your life. It helps know what you want, how you think you can get it and a way of keeping yourself on track.
Vision
Start with a vision. Just imagine what is possible for you over the next year. Take some time to sit quietly and really think about what you want in your life. Don’t get caught up in what you think is attainable, really allow yourself to envision a life that excites you. Often we fail to work for goals because they just aren’t exciting enough. People tell us that goals have to be realistic, but sometimes knowing that we can achieve something doesn’t give us enough motivation to pursue it. We need goals that scare/excite us a little. Our milestones can be realistic, but the larger goal and vision has to be worth getting out of bed for.
Develop a Plan
Developing a plan is critical to success. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just something to get you started. Decide what new habits you are going to develop and which old habits need to go. Create a schedule for yourself, plan your workouts, plan your meals, plan quality time with the people you care about. Think about situations where you normally react in a negative way and look for new ways of being, that will improve your outcome of those situations. Identify the skills you want to develop and create a learning plan. What books will you read? What classes will you take? Create a list of potential mentors and plan how you will reach out to them.
Accountability
It is critical to have some system to hold yourself accountable. To some degree, you must hold yourself accountable. It can be very helpful to ask your close friends and family to hold you accountable. You can create some public accountability by posting to your social media sites the areas you want to improve. One of the most effective ways is to hire a coach. They will be more objective and since you are paying them, you are more likely to follow through. Whatever you decide, be sure to include some way to hold yourself accountable.
